About Eel River Fishing

  December is when salmon run reaches its zenith,  and steelhead start in November all the way through March, with it's highest levels of activity in January. Conditions of river always is a factor. Look to our maps for best places to go and access spots.


Fortuna is a hub get information, but basically the Eel River flows for around 100 miles and its mouth is 12 miles south of Eureka.

Besides salmon and steelhead, a little known Shad run during the warmer months is available. 

The King or Chinook arrive in August. They remain below Ferndale bridge awaiting the high water. for their journey upstream. You can fish through tDecember, the best time is October. The average Eel chinooks are 8-15 lbs, with some up to 40lbs.

The Eel is famous for its winter steelhead beginning in November through March, best time is usually during January. The average Eel steelhead trout  runs 8 pounds, with fish to 15 pounds often and up to 20 pounds if your are fortunate.

 Lower Section for Chinook salmon

To get to fishing in the lower section for the Chinook, take Cannibal Island Road off of Eel River Drive due west of the town of Loleta. A boat ramp for launching is just before the bridge.
Anchovies or spinners work well here, best by boat while trolling.

In Fortuna, try from shore is on Riverwalk Drive with either anchovies for bait or lures. Salmon, up to 50 pounds, are routinely hooked in this area each fall.
